Students in schools are beginning to use artificial intelligence to assist them with studying, completing assignments, and with lessons that they struggle with. Throughout the years, AI tools have become more common and relied on by students. This is leading to schools and students debating if they should be allowed to use AI to help them learn and complete assignments.
Artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT can be used to answer questions quickly and efficiently, break down the steps, and also create scenarios that can help to better understand problems. However, some schools see them as a threat to the education system as it allows students to avoid using their own thinking. This has started a trend where there are constant debates about how AI should be used or not between students, educators, and schools.
Some people support the fact that AI can help students to study easier and more efficiently. With AI, students can get help by themselves rather than relying on teachers or other students to be able to help with whatever they are struggling with. On top of that, it allows them to understand the steps of how AI processes and solves problems, which can help a student to learn off of this and advance in their knowledge.
Some argue that students can become too reliant on AI if it becomes allowed in schools. If students were to rely on it too much to complete tasks, they wouldn’t be able to fully understand the learning process on their own. Teachers also worry about the threat of students using AI for things like cheating, or if they are doing their own work.
Lots of professors and educators believe that AI should not be banned, regardless of how it can hurt the learning process for students. It could be used as a learning tool like how we have access to the internet to do research, and if properly used this can advance our education system drastically.
According to Sam Altman, CEO of the artificial intelligence program called OpenAI, “AI will probably most change education by giving students more personalized learning.” This supports the fight for AI to be used within schools because of how it could be more of an advantage than a disadvantage.
With education changing constantly over time and AI continuing to be used, schools can either learn to accept and adapt, or find an equal standing point to where it can be used to support learning while allowing both students and teachers to develop individually.
