AP exam season is fast approaching, and there are more than a couple of tests. The entire rigorous curriculum condensed into 2 hours can be challenging. But with the right approach, this entire process can be a thousand times simpler.
Your score on these exams determines mastery of college-level courses and grants students credits in their college career. Even if you don’t score a 4 or 5, Advanced Placement exams can be a good benchmark for what to expect from college courses and gauge your readiness. If you have the chance to take an AP exam, always take it. A low score will not negatively affect you in any way!
At Park Slope Collegiate, two Advanced Placement classes are offered. AP United States History taught by Ms.Ortiz (11th Grade) and AP English Literature taught by Ms. Vora (12th Grade). Both are agreed to be very rigorous courses with APUSH considered to be one of the most demanding and AP Lit to be one of the most abstract and subjective.
For both of the exams, you will focus on different skills, Concrete vs Abstract. But do not despair, you can still score a 4 or 5 with some simple tips!
APUSH
- Learn to read and summarize documents concisely.
- Create a timeline and don’t focus on specific moments in history; look at the big picture.
- Make sure you are prepared for long writing questions.
- Practice thesis prompts and Active Recall skills.
- Visit Heimler’s History and watch his review videos.
AP Literature
- Pick 2-3 high-quality books and read them in preparation.
- Practice writing a full essay in 40 minutes.
- Practice thesis prompts.
- Master themes, structures, and character analysis.
Ask your respective teachers for some tips, but, most importantly, trust in your preparation and do your best! Good luck!
