If you would’ve asked me my freshmen year how I felt about myself, I would’ve lied and said great things about myself and what I love. In actuality, that was probably the most insecure year of my life. Think about it: straight out of middle school, into a new school, better looking faces all around, still incredibly awkward.
Over time, though, I came up with a formula which always makes me feel better no matter what day it is. You start with 5 things that make you feel good about yourself. The rule of thumb is to have 2 or 3 of the 5 things done in order to feel confident. A couple of things to keep in mind:
- It doesn’t have to be physical, one of your five things can be going into school with a more positive attitude
- Let it be something you can do THAT MORNING, if nails are one of your 5 things, unless you’re a nail tech that might not be the best thing to put down. Or find ways around it, for example, press on’s.
- You’re creating it, whatever makes YOU feel good in your own skin do it. No matter how dumb it might sound to others if what will make you feel the best is with a certain accessory or outfit do it!
Personally my 5 keys are:
- Outfit
- Hair
- Makeup
- Shoes
- Scent
At least two of those things are done everyday in order for me to feel my best. For example, let’s say my hair doesn’t look the best. I’ll wake up extra early to use my favorite soap, then I’ll use whatever makeup I have on hand and wear my favorite jeans or shirt. Then I know I’ll feel better. Sometimes the mixes can get a bit funky. Like, let’s say I don’t have a good outfit, I’ll put on my more expensive shoes which I don’t wear to school, do my make-up, and make sure I put the extra few hours the night before to make my hair look nice.
When creating your list, make sure at least two of these can be done on a daily basis. Of course, more can be done, but sometimes life is life-ing and only 2 things are working. When using these, you have to make sure that they will make you feel better for that day even if it takes a couple of more minutes. For example, there were times where I had my laundry due the next day and I had worn all of my cute clothes. The night before I knew that and woke up a bit earlier to take a longer shower with my favorite soap and do my make up. Though my fit was probably terrible, I still felt good as my face was tea and I smelled amazing.
Now I’m not writing this as this is the cure for all of your insecurities. This is simply helping you through your journey. To truly obtain total self love and confidence you need to work from the inside out. It is easier said than done so having these 5 things will help you work through those obstacles.
