For some, a new light and for others, disappointment.
The 2025 New York City Mayoral Election the results are in, and it’s safe to say that it was a clean victory by (Democrat) Zohran Mamdani as he won over Andrew Cuomo, who was a part of the Democratic party but was running on the Independent line, and Curtius Sliwa, a Republican. The final results show Mamdani winning at 50.4% of votes and Andrew Cuomo at 41.6%.
So why is there so much drama? This election has been full of ups and downs. One of the most interesting things that’s happened this election is an astounding 2,049,631 people city-wide who voted in this election via “The Associated Press”. This is the biggest turnout in over 50 years for a mayoral election in NYC.
Former governor and mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo expressed his worries for if Mamdani won: “We need to be able to stand up to Donald Trump and fight for New York. We know he’ll send the National Guard to New York [if Mamdani wins]. New Yorkers cannot let that happen.”
This news came into a lot of residents’ households and set off worries.
After Mamdani claimed his victory last night he gave a direct speech: “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up, If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him.”
The new mayor has a vision and he is passionate about putting it in place. Many have come out against Mamdani to show they don’t support his Democratic Socialist view. Democratic socialism is a political view that advocates for a democratically run society and economy, essential services are publicly controlled, and the economy is run for the benefit of the majority of society, not just a select few.
Unlike our former mayors, only one of them has been 34 years old, John Purroy Mitchel in the 1913 NYC mayoral election, or Muslim. But they aren’t voted in office for their religion or age, it’s for their politics. With Zohran Mandani’s victory in the NYC mayoral race, the city embarks on a new chapter, filled with promise and the potential for a new age of politics.
